I’ve just finished a MOOC with Future Learn on the likely economic prosperity of future generations. It was delivered from an Australian perspective (with Europe as a single economic bloc in many articles), but I found this helpful to approach it in a more detached way than if it was fully involved in UK politics.
The course guides us through the arguments, balancing the rise of AI, a decline in the middle class and increase in inequality with the knowledge that so far the destruction of industries has led to new opportunities which have generally balanced the employment lost with increased efficiency in old industries. Apart from the lecturer’s perspectives, it introduces external sources from the Austrailian government and views from other economists including Schumpeter and linking through to articles from Freakonomics.
This was my first MOOC with Future Learn, and I found it a bit lacking on the engagement side – just quite easy multiple choice questions and the option to participate below the line in each article’s comments space. I’ve preferred the Coursera approach, especially where they have managed peer marking.
